Araia: Km 0. San Roman: 3.5 Km. (Bicuña) Entzia Port: 8.1 Km. Puerto Nuevo: Km 17.1. Ullíbarri: Km 19.7. Alda: Km 21.2.
We wake up thinking we will sleep on the mountain and leave the town by Santsarreka Street or the A-3020 road. Straight on this road and we cross another. We reach the railroad tracks that we cross by a bridge and just after that we cross the highway E-5. We arrive at a roundabout and go straight across. A hotel and a big collection of trucks greet us on our right. We arrive at the A-3138, which we take on our left, to go towards the houses of San Román de San Millán.
We take a right angle to our right into the first street of the village. After crossing it, we come to a fountain and a paved road that we take to our left. After only 70 m, we turn right onto another paved road that starts here. We arrive at a barrier for livestock. We pass it and when the road divides we take the right-hand path. At 250 m, the road divides again and we go left. At 150 m, there is another fork and again we take the left. Now we just continue straight on our dirt road, which is broad and well defined.
As we go higher there are fewer trees and more open green spaces. The path becomes less defined. We still walk ahead. Just as we reach the top, we reach a poorly defined crossroads: we take the right that brings us after just 250 m, following a left bend, to a shepherd’s hut,. We are in the pass of Entzia (Bicuña).
We make our way behind the shepherd’s hut. We are in a beech forest, alongside some rocks, which are on our right. It is hard to find a path. We head for Zezama plain. Having reached the plain, we cross it and find a good dirt road, well defined. We follow it left and cross a half paved road. We find a road that is not very clear and comes out of some stockyards in front of us. We follow it until it leaves us in a meadow that we cross to get to a clearly defined dirt road, which we take to our right. We reach the paved road A-2128 and take it to our left. At 200 m from the intersection there is a spring to our left, 50 meters from the road. The source indicated clearer do not usually have water in summer but following the road on the left side, after a fence protecting the source of cattle, there is another water source that is also very good in summer.
We follow the road until we reach a fork that we take on the right. In that way we enter the A-3114, on which we will continue for 1.2 km until we reach a wide and well defined dirt road which goes off on the left. We take it and go away at right angles from the A-3114 road. We go straight ahead without leaving the road and after 1.8 km arrive at Puerto Nuevo (New Mountain Pass).
Please note here: there are no signs in the Puerto, so we have to be aware when the dirt road goes left in a very sharp turn. At this point, we must continue straight on, straight towards the Valle de Arana. There is a poorly defined path ahead of us, which we are to take. Further on it becomes a dirt road. After 1.2 km we come to cultivated fields and to a reservoir of water, which we leave on our right. We walk ahead, without taking any of the side roads, and reach the village of Ullíbarri. At the entrance of the village, to our left, we find the Hermitage of Santa María.
We go through the village and we pass Ullíbarri church to our right. At the end of the Main Street (Calle Mayor) is the Hermitage of San Cristobal. At this point, the road divides and we take a right, to go directly to Alda, our final destination today.

La mejor opción para ir a San Román: Saliendo de Araia, cuando llegamos al cruce de Egino a la derecha, lo tomamos. Enseguida llegamos a la entrada de Albeniz. Sin entrar en él tomamos el camino de la derecha que nos lleva a la estación de ferrocarril. En el siguiente cruce, en las primeras casas, seguimos a la derecha y llegamos a la estación de Araia. Cruzamos los andenes y al otro lado encontramos un camino decorado con piedras y estacas pintadas. Lo seguimos y a treinta metros giramos a la derecha. Pasamos por un puente encima de la A1, mas adelante junto al cementerio y llegamos a San Román. Cruzamos la carretera y por la calle que sube de frente, junto a la Iglesia, atravesamos el pueblo para llegar a la fuente descrita mas arriba. Evitamos el peligroso e intenso tráfico de camiones a la salida de Araia y acortamos el camino.
Lo mismo que en la etapa anterior de máxima dificultad para los bicigrinos. La alternativa es: En la rotonda donde se encuentra el restaurante y el aparcamiento para los camiones tomar la carretera al puerto de Opakua. Una vez arriba seguir por la carretera hasta encontrar a la izquierda la fuente que se describe en la guía. A partir de aquí seguir las mismas indicaciones de la guía.
La verdad es que hemos encontrado bastante dificultad en encontrar la senda una vez llegados a Entzia con las bicis. Una vez llegados a la última barrera no teníamos muy claro como proseguir… Si os decidís a subir por Entzia, en épocas lluviosas preparaos para un barrizal como nunca hayáis visto jejejeje…

Sería muy interesante que se incluyeran en la pagina los track de gps para poder seguir la ruta sin perderse y también indicar si es posible realizar la ruta en bicicleta.

- Aviso para peregrinos: a varias personas lugareñas que preguntamos, nos indicaron que, si bien es fácil para los que han vivido allí toda la vida moverse por esa serranía y atravesarla, sin embargo es arriesgado para senderistas no asiduos ya que los caminos no se ven claros por el follaje, hojas y espesura de bosque. Supongo que esta dificultad todavía se acrecentará más en otoño, invierno.
Apuntamos la dificultad: vamos a trabajar la señalización, siempre que sea posible. Pediremos permisos. ¡Agradecemos las ayudas que se puedan ofrecer para mejorar el Camino Ignaciano!
